FIELD NOTES / CARE & UPKEEP

Keep the dry things dry.

A practical packing check for a wet day in Bermuda.

Read what the bag actually promises.

Before buying, check whether the manufacturer describes the whole bag as waterproof or only its fabric as water resistant. Look for instructions about seams, closures and intended use. Ask if the description does not clearly cover the conditions you expect.

Separate the things that must stay dry.

List the contents that need particular protection: paperwork, spare clothing and electronics. Choose suitable inner protection for each item, following its own instructions. Do not assume an ordinary zipped pocket or a rain cover is intended for immersion.

Plan for wet kit coming home.

Think about where a wet outer layer will go before leaving. Keep it separate from the things you want to remain dry. Once home, unpack promptly and follow the care instructions for each item before storing it again.

Check before the next outing.

Look over closures, seams and any protective liners. Replace or repair worn components as the manufacturer directs. If you need help choosing a bag or finding its care information, send us the model name and explain how you plan to use it.
